What's the Big Deal About Disc Locks?

You've got 30 seconds, which lock would you try to cut?

There's no such things as a 100% secure storage unit, especially with so many battery-powered cutting tools on the market, today. Every thief has one, and you're next on his list if your storage unit is poorly locked.

Here's how it typically goes:

The thief will arrive at the facility, drive the rows, and look for the unit "secured" with a flimsy padlock with an exposed shackle. If it's one of those Snoopy locks that you borrowed from your kid's school backpack, he'll hop out with his bolt cutters and pop it loose in about two seconds. For shackle locks that are "cut resistant" he'll use his power cutter, which takes him about five seconds.

Once inside, he'll take what he wants and then he'll re-lock your unit with his own lock and hope nobody notices the break-in. And if you're one who only visits your storage unit every six months (or longer) your stuff will be fenced and gone by the time the facility owner finds the break-in among miles of security footage.

The lesson here?

Use a disc lock and the thief will likely skip past your unit. While disc locks can still be cut, it takes a lot longer, with lots of sparks and noise. Theft is a crime of opportunity, and most thieves are looking for the quick hit.

IMPORTANT REMINDER:

Our facility, and your storage rental agreement, do not provide insurance coverage for your stored belongings. It is up to you to either provide coverage of your own, or purchase additional coverage.
