The De-Clutter Dilemma

Mom, have you seen my sleeping bag?

In our society the term "perfect world" is batted around quite a bit, and typically used as a way to justify our shortcomings. For example: in a perfect world I'd have space for everything I own, and wouldn't need to rent a storage unit.

But that's a tall order for most people, largely due to another popular saying: "life happens."

People move, people downsize, people upsize and life throws a lot of transitions our way. Sometimes a storage unit is inevitable, and here are a few tips to streamline the process of de-cluttering so you can avoid renting more storage space than necessary.

PLAN AND PREPARE

  • Schedule specific times for decluttering, even if it's just 15-30 minutes each day.
  • Begin with an area that feels most overwhelming or has the most visible clutter.
  • Have bins or bags for keeping, donating, and discarding items readily available.
  • Set a timer, if needed to stay focused and avoid getting sidetracked.

SORT AND PURGE

  • Divide items into categories: keep, donate, trash, or sell.
  • Ask Yourself Questions: Do you use the item regularly, is it in good condition, does it bring you joy?
  • The "One Year" Rule: If you haven't used an item in a year, consider getting rid of it.
  • The 50% Rule: Remove half the items from any given area to make it less cluttered.
  • Don't Overthink: Make quick decisions and avoid getting attached to items you don't need or use.
  • Toss the Trash: Dispose of broken, damaged, or unusable items promptly.

ADDITIONAL TIPS

  • Declutter Regularly: Make decluttering a habit, rather than a one-time event.
  • Start Small: Don't try to declutter your entire home at once.
  • Give Away One Item a Day: A simple but effective way to declutter consistently.
  • Focus on Visible Clutter First: Tackle the most obvious clutter first to create an immediate sense of improvement.
  • Don't Be Afraid to Let Go: It's okay to let go of things you no longer need or use.
  • Consider a "20/20 Rule": If you can replace an item for less than $20 in less than 20 minutes, consider getting rid of it.
  • Decluttering can improve your well-being: A clutter-free space can reduce stress, improve focus, and enhance your overall quality of life.
